Local Actors Approve Riverwalk Carpeting

San Antonio has proven to be a breeding ground for fine actorial talent, starting with the granddaddy of them all – hopefully, not literally – Tommy Leroy Jones. It’s a short 50 years later that another mighty tower of acting appeared in the form of Summer Glau, who single-handedly brought comedy to one of the most beloved science fictions franchises. Strolling around the Riverwalk recently, Visit The Riverwalk staff started interviewing strangers to find out if they intended to be the next Riverwalk acting sensation, and was startled to find a nest of honest local homegrown talent.

“Not Rocket Science”

Upon discovering the school of actors trapped on an ADA ramp behind the Majestic Theater, it became clear that the plan to carpet the Riverwalk had been in effect for quite some time. Mimi Sisquin, Queen of the troupe, said she expected the work to take between 2 and 5 days, and was inspired by the idea that all Riverwalk visitors should be met with “a red carpet”. The carpet, provided by Ashley Furniture’s Underfoot Division and financed by a federal grant, is designed for large numbers of feet and can repel any red dirt from any angle. Each night, after the 2am closing time, the 15-strong carpet maintenance crew will deploy a dozen machines to buff up the covering, and hold umbrellas over it in inclement weather.

“Illegal and the wrong color”, gushes Historical Association.

Anne Groth, the head of San Antonio’s Historical & Heritage Association, has discovered that downtown has a court house and intends to use, preparing her walker for the half mile journey there on Monday. Her major gripe about the carpeting concept is the lack of HHA involvement, and Ms Groth feels that blue would be a more royal color befitting of the stature of the Riverwalk. She is requiring that the Majestic’s cloud of actors present their proposal to her council of seniors, who are happy to provide coffee and cookies for the occasion. It has been suggested that approval will be fast-tracked if they can perform impromptu scenes from one of the nicer Shakespeare plays, like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for example. When we approached Mimi for comment, the entire troupe had escaped the ramp, disbanded and we weren’t really sure if any of this had even happened.

Carpeting will result in road closures around downtown between July 3 – 8 during the popular annual Miller Week on the Riverwalk.
