One of the most common pieces of feedback we receive from visitors, apart from being asked why the Alamo was built among skyscrapers, is “how can I take a piece of the Riverwalk home with me?”. For the greedy, photos and a lifetime of memories aren’t enough, but here at VisitTheRiverwalk.com headquarters, we’ve devised the perfect solution. Build your own scale model of the world-famous San Antonio Riverwalk. We have produced precise instructions below, but send us your photos of your model and you could win a unique VTR Happy Hour Wallclock in our scale model competition.

How To Build a San Antonio Riverwalk

While your Riverwalk will never have the fame and stature of the real thing, it will last as a lifetime reminder of the awesomeness of your visit. First, you will need:

  • A cereal box
  • A large 36 can soda box, such as a Pepsi container
  • Scissors and a sharp knife, the sort carried by 210 Gang Members would be ideal
  • Sticky tape and plastic wrap
  • Blue coloring, such as Windex
  • Authentic decorations, such as rubber ducks, multi-colored lettuce and salt to represents lines of coke available on the Riverwalk
  • Probably some screwdrivers, hexagonal wrenches and pliers too

Step1

1. First, draw the outline of the River on your large piece of cardboard, which can be represented by a large capital D. If you use a lowercase ‘d’ it will be wrong.

Step1b

2. Once you ‘D’ is complete, create a riverbank out of strips of cereal box cardboard and tape these down, ensuring to create a waterproof seal.

Step2

3. Next, make your beautifully blue Riverwalk water by mixing water with Windex in a coffee jug. For an authentic blue, we recommend an equal mixture of water and chemicals. You could also opt for extra authenticity by throwing some trash into the mix.

Step3

5. Create your authentic Riverboats using the old Dentamint chewing gum holders. Buy the red brand for accurate coloring!

Step5

6. In the construction phase, line the riverbanks with multi-color lettuce to simulate the beautiful trees and shrubbery, add the ducks in position, and pour your river water into the model. Finally align your riverboats, and install a ceiling fan to allow the boats to glide around your river. Imagine the serenity of listening to the history from the boat driver.

Step6

7. For the full effect, open a beer and prepare some mediocre food, preferably while playing some Mexican music.

Step7

8. Once some final artistic touches are applied, your model will look just like the real thing.
