Free Restrooms Open In Parking Lot
If you’re like a San Antonian, then you probably use the restroom several times a day,or find an empty Miller Lite bottle to refill. The City is very proud to announce the opening of the first public restroom in the 7th Largest City in the United States and the 3rd Largest City in the Biggest State. Located in the Rio Del Rio Parking Lot, world famous for its spiralling entrances and exits that were inspired by a 1976 sketch by Frank Geary, the circle restroom center is expected to become one of the most popular attractions in the downtown area.
Anna San Giacomo, Head City Project Manager for Public Works and part time manager of the Texan Institute of Cultures, described the facilities during the grand unveiling at Texas Land & Cattle last night. “With 5 stalls in both male and female areas, and disabled access through the a rear sliding vent, there are plenty of toilets for everyone in the city for now and for our children.” The urinals use the latest infrared technology to ensure flawless flushing, and the white porcelain bowls are shaped with Texas-state tile sourced from El Paso, in commemoration of the people who died in the Alamo.
Local businessman Randy Nix congratulated the city on the project, which has only taken 32 months to complete. “This means a whole lot less harrassment for businesses from people wanting bathrooms,” he commented, noting that while gays and the homeless needed facilities, it wasn’t the role of local businesses to meet their needs. “Austin has plenty of free bathrooms for people who don’t want to pay – we’re focused on paying customers who forget to use the facilities while they’re paying customers.”
A temporary hotel tax of 0.25% was levied to pay for the $2mm project, and tourists will receive free packs of toilet paper to reflect their contribution to the local economy.
