Preparing for St Patrick's Day!

St Patrick’s Day is barely 3 weeks away, and there’s a vibe around town, one that says “it’s time to party… again”. St Patrick’s Day, named after the Irish patron saint of drinking, and immortalized by the now-banned 1940s Guinness commercial, is a special day for San Antonians: it launches the official start of party season. Shortly followed by Fiesta, and a long hot summer of calling in sick for work due to hangovers, St Patrick’s Day is so celebrated in San Antonio that it even makes the Irish look lazy. “To be sure,” said Paddy O’Nelly, from Dirty Nell’s on the Riverwalk.

And where better to celebrate the most important day of the year than the world famous San Antonio Riverwalk, which is dyed green for this momentous occasion. Locals playfully push tourists into the 3-feet deep cesspool that has become our beloved river, and local gangbangers get to act like mariachis, all in good fun of course. Stabbings were down last year, according to the local park police, who expect to beat their quota for drunk and disorderly violations this year.

Of course, Guinness isn’t the only Irish drink – there will be specials on Bailey’s, Jamesons and Irish Carbombs, which guarantee a great time to be had by all, especially the under-21s who pile into Polyesters and Pat O’s to get shitfaced while away from the shocked gaze of their folks. 2009 promises to be a bumper year for drink specials, as the local economy has a taken a hit from illegal workers who have left due to lack of work.
